The ways in which a dentist can improve your smile

Is there something about your smile that you want to change?

Everyday life appears to expose teeth to some gnarly wear and tear. You might find your teeth and gums affected by trauma like sports accidents or taking a spill in the shower. Often your smile changes because of medical problems or ageing.

Your dentist will prescribe ways to improve both the look and the purpose of your smile, regardless of the underlying cause. Here are common treatments that can improve your smile's appearance, many of which can also enhance your oral health.

Crowns

By restoring or reinforcing damaged or discoloured teeth, dental crowns will improve your smile. They are mounted over current tooth structures, helping to restore the natural appearance and function of the tooth. Following root canal treatment or to support a dental bridge, crowns may also be placed.

For a natural-looking finish, crowns are normally made from porcelain or ceramic that is colour-matched to the rest of your teeth. They may also be made of metal with a porcelain outer layer.

To have a crown installed, it usually takes two visits to your dentist, not counting any other procedures that might be needed, such as a root canal. These can be manufactured at the dental clinic if the dentist provides same-day crowns and can be installed during a single visit.

Implants

This is a major one, since an implant removes an entire tooth in nature. It can have a lot of effects on replacing a missing tooth, including your ability to speak and chew, the appearance of your smile, and your overall health.

And what is, precisely, a dental implant? It is a titanium post that is mounted in your jaw, serving as a crown-supporting artificial tooth root. Compared to things like dentures, it provides a more fixed solution.

Not everyone is a dental implant nominee. If you have an oral health disorder such as gum disease or medical issues such as diabetes, they may not be ideal for you. Smoking can also trigger implant complications and affect recovery times.

Bridges

Bridges can be a way to replace missing teeth, much like implants. Basically, bridges are false teeth attached between two crowns. The teeth must be prepped for the crowns on either side of the crack, with the bridge cemented between them in place.

While these appear to be less permanent than implants, if the teeth near the gap have fillings or may require crowns anyway, bridges may be a good choice. A dentist will help you understand whether you want to improve your smile by removing missing teeth, whether you should go for bridges, implants or another alternative.

Orthodontics

You probably knew a lot of kids who had braces in high school, but did you know a lot of adults get orthodontic care, too? It can be easier to brush the teeth by fixing crooked teeth and misaligned jaws and can have a variety of roll-on effects. Plus, clearly straighter teeth can have a large effect on the look of your smile.

Over time, braces and alignments shift the teeth and jaw into desired locations, with your dentist or orthodontist making daily changes over the course of your care. For adults who wish to change their smile without altering their lifestyle or having visible metal braces, transparent aligners may be a remedy.

Based on how often your teeth and jaw need to shift and the type of braces or alignments you want, your dentist or orthodontist will set the duration of your procedure. Some treatments can take a few months to complete, while others can take a year or more.

Whitening

Although teeth whitening is still one of the most common facilities, it does not offer the same practical or health benefits as other treatments. Bleaching gels are used in teeth whitening procedures to help raise stains and eliminate discolouration from the surface of the teeth. In a dental clinic, you can undergo care or your dentist can arrange a take-home kit for you to use for a period of time.

A whitening gel and a tray that should be put over your teeth for the specified period are usually included in take-home kits. After one to two weeks, you can see results, depending on how much whitening you want.

During your appointment, your dentist will inspect your mouth and tell you if the whitening is correct for you. For all forms of decoloration, bleaching is not successful, and your decoloration can be caused by a more severe underlying problem that first needs to be handled. That's why, even if you plan to use an over-the-counter treatment, it's important to speak to a dentist.
