Oral and maxillofacial surgery Procedures

Oral and maxillofacial surgery, also known as oral and occasionally dento-alveolar surgery, ranges from basic tooth extraction to teeth, soft tissue, and jaw-related surgical procedures. "Maxillofacial" refers to the face and jaw, while the mouth is referred to as "oral".

You can either visit a non-specialized dentist or a specialized maxillofacial surgeon to obtain adequate care, depending on the requirements. Popular procedures for oral and maxillofacial surgery include:

  • Extractions of a minimally invasive tooth.
  • Surgical removal of worn down or affected teeth, wisdom teeth, and preserved tooth roots is clinically useful.
  • Surgery, which is also referred to as orthognathic (jaw) surgery, to fix jaw discrepancies.
  • To prepare for orthodontic surgery, expose affected canines.
  • Removal of a tumor from the jaw, mouth or facial area (usually caused by oral or mouth cancer).
  • Reconstruction of the face or jaw following facial injury or complications due to trauma.
  • Cosmetic facial surgeries, including rhinoplasty, facelifts, nose reconstruction, reconstruction of the eye socket, and otoplasty
  • Biopsies, most of which are used for oral cancer diagnosis and treatment. The treatment includes scraping, for laboratory examination, a tissue sample of abnormal cells.

Oral & Maxillofacial Types of Surgery

Many different forms of oral and maxillofacial surgery, such as implants and extractions, are available. Owing to accidental injury, trauma, disease, deformities, parodontal complications, dental caries, or tooth loss, patients usually undergo oral surgery.

For all oral procedures, a local anesthetic is often used. An oral surgeon may suggest combining the local anesthetic with conscious sedation or general anesthetic, depending on the type of surgery. Popular treatments for surgery include:

Removal of Wisdom Teeth

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have advanced expertise in extracting wisdom teeth. They are trained to use deeper sedation levels than dentists who are general or non-specialized.

Dental Implants

You may need a dental implant after tooth extraction or tooth loss, which is an artificial root of the tooth that replaces your permanent tooth. The restorations are inserted surgically into your jawbone during dental implant surgery. To sustain artificial teeth, they create a strong base (dental crowns).
However, dentures could be advised instead of dental implants if you have a lot of missing teeth.

Oral Cancer

Oral surgeons, along with doctors and physicians, play a direct role in diagnosing, treating, and conducting surgery on people with oral cancer. The formation of irregular carcinoma cells starts with oral cancer and results in the growth of mouth sores (cancerous lesions).
In the mouth, cheeks, gums, tongue, lips, palate, sinuses, or the floor of the mouth, oral cancer can grow. Oral cancer is sometimes known to be neck cancer and esophageal cancer. The disease is life threatening without early care.

Surgery for Reconstructive Jaw

Reconstructive, or corrective, jaw surgery is another form of oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is used to correct facial damage, repair issues with soft tissue caused by an injury, and/or restore the jaw.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)

TMD is the most common joint and muscle temporomandibular disorder (TMJD). When opening or closing their mouths, patients with TMD usually suffer from persistent headaches, earaches, or discomfort.

Orthognathic Process

Orthognathic jaw surgery requires both orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. In order to fix jaw deformities and inconsistencies, Orthognathic translates to "straight jaws," and incorporates orthodontic care with surgical intervention.
Jaw surgery can include correcting the location and size of the jaw in patients who do not benefit from minor treatment alone, such as braces or clear alignments, or fixing extreme malocclusion (incorrect bite).
